How it works
Print, cut, read
Everything you need is a printer, a sheet of card and ten minutes. Here is how to get a clean bookmark on the first try.
Three steps
-

01
Print
Open the PDF for your paper size. Print the test sheet (pages 3 and 4) first, then pages 5 to 8 at actual size, flipping on the long edge.
-

02
Cut
Follow the crop marks with a ruler and a craft knife or a trimmer. Long edges first.
-

03
Read
Slip one into the book you are reading and write on the back as you go.
Before you print
- Paper
- Matte cardstock around 176 gsm (65 lb cover). Heavier card works through a rear or manual feed, up to the weight your printer’s manual lists (often 200 to 230 gsm).
- Size
- Print at actual size or 100%. Never “fit to page”.
- Both sides
- Print the test sheet (pages 3 and 4) on plain paper, hold it to the light and check that the crosses on the back sit on the ones on the front. Then flip on the long edge.
- Cutting
- A trimmer, or a metal ruler and a craft knife. Cut the long edges first.
- Finish
- Matte takes pencil best. Laminate or sleeve after cutting if you like.

Questions
What do I get?
A zip with a US Letter PDF, an A4 PDF and a short README. Each set is six bookmarks, front and back, three to a sheet.
What paper should I use?
Matte cardstock of about 176 gsm (65 lb cover) works in most home printers. Heavier card works through a rear or manual feed, up to the weight your printer’s manual lists (often 200 to 230 gsm).
Will the back line up with the front?
Print the test sheet (pages 3 and 4) on plain paper first, hold it to the light and check. Then print at actual size and flip on the long edge.
How big is a bookmark?
Each bookmark trims to 2 by 7 inches (5.1 by 17.8 cm).
Can I print more than once?
Yes. Print as many as you like for yourself and your household, and give printed bookmarks as gifts. Please do not share or resell the file.
