How to make a word search?

Make a word search by choosing a short list of words, placing them in a grid of letters, and filling the empty squares with other letters. With this maker you type the words, pick a level and a grid size, and press Print. The answer key comes on the next page.

How the word search generator builds a puzzle

Type a title and your words, one per line. The generator places each word in the grid in the directions your level allows, then fills the gaps with other letters. Press New puzzle until you like the layout. Spaces and punctuation are dropped inside the grid, and a word can be no longer than the grid is wide.

A free word search maker for class and home

The puzzles are free for classroom and home use, with no sign-up. Type the week's spelling or vocabulary words, keep the name and date line on, and print one copy per student. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you type leaves your device.

Make your own word search bookmarks

Choose 4 bookmarks per sheet to make your own word search bookmarks. Each strip is 2 by 7 inches on Letter and 50 mm by 7 inches on A4. Print the same puzzle on all four or four different puzzles, use cardstock of about 176 gsm (65 lb cover), and cut on the marks.

Word search maker with answer key

Every print adds an answer key on the next page, with each word shaded where it hides. Use the Answer key button above the preview to check it first. Untick Answer key page if you only want the puzzle, or keep the key for yourself and hand out page 1.

Spelling word search maker for teachers

For spelling practice, type the week's list and pick a level that fits the class. Easy puzzles keep the words across and down for young spellers. A 10 by 10 grid holds about 8 to 10 short words, so pick a bigger grid for long lists or long words.
