Start with the word list and hunt for one word at a time in the grid. Look for its first letter, then check the letters around it in each direction the puzzle allows. The bookmarks run across and down only. Circle the word when you find it and cross it off the list.
Each printable is a free PDF for US Letter (8.5 by 11 inches) or A4 (210 by 297 mm). Print one puzzle for each table at a class party, or print a stack and let everyone pick one. The bookmark sheets hold four 2 by 7 inch strips, so cut them out on the marks and hand them out as treats.
All ten puzzles and all eight bookmarks are free for personal and classroom use. Pick the puzzle that fits the reader, print as many copies as you need and keep the answer key page for yourself if you like. Please share a link to this page instead of uploading the PDFs to another site.
The bookmarks hide seven words each, such as pumpkin, vine and seeds on Pumpkin Time, or ghost, boo and sheet on Friendly Ghosts. Others use candy, mask and costume, or witch, broom and potion. The easy pages have eight words, the medium pages twelve and the hard pages eighteen.
The three easy puzzles are Pumpkin Patch, Trick or Treat and Friendly Ghosts. Each uses a 10 by 10 grid with eight words that run only across and down, so they suit children from about age 6, when they can read short words. The bookmarks run across and down too.
The three hard puzzles are Halloween Words, Monster Party and Halloween Around the World. Each uses a 16 by 16 grid and hides eighteen words in every direction, backwards too. The four medium puzzles sit in between, with a 13 by 13 grid, twelve words and diagonals.
Each puzzle is a PDF with the puzzle on page 1 and the answer key on page 2. You get a US Letter file and an A4 file, so it prints right on paper from either side of the Atlantic. Print at 100% so the letters stay large and easy to read.
The eight bookmarks are the simplest puzzles here. Each has an 8 by 12 grid, seven short words and a picture to color, with titles like Pumpkin Time, Witch Hat, Candy Corn and Costume Party. A child can solve a few words between chapters and color the picture at the top.
Every Halloween puzzle has its answer key on page 2 of the same PDF, with each word shaded where it hides. Print page 1 only if you want to keep the answers for yourself. Kids can also print both pages and check their own work.
Print a stack for the classroom party or the trick-or-treat sleepover and let everyone pick one. Cut out the bookmarks and hand them out as treats instead of candy. Each PDF has the puzzle on page 1 and the answer key on page 2, so print page 1 only if you want to keep the answers for yourself.
Easy puzzles (10 by 10, across and down) work from about age 6, when children can read short words. Medium puzzles (13 by 13 with diagonals) suit ages 8 to 11, and hard puzzles (16 by 16, every direction) are for older kids and adults.
Every PDF includes an answer key on page 2, with the puzzle on page 1. Each word is shaded where it hides, so you can print page 1 only and keep the answers for yourself.
Each puzzle comes as a US Letter PDF (8.5 by 11 inches) and an A4 PDF (210 by 297 mm). Print at 100% so the letters stay large.
The bookmark sheet holds four 2 by 7 inch strips, each with a picture to color, a small 8 by 12 puzzle and seven words. Print it on cardstock, cut on the marks, and solve a few words at a time while you read.
Cardstock of 65 lb cover, about 176 gsm, feeds through most home printers and makes sturdy bookmarks. Plain printer paper is fine for the full-page puzzles.
The puzzles are free for personal and classroom use. Please share a link to this page instead of uploading the PDFs to another site.
There are ten full-page puzzles: three easy, four medium and three hard. The page also has eight word-search bookmarks with a picture to color, so there are eighteen to choose from in all.
The pictures and words are friendly, with pumpkins, costumes, candy and friendly ghosts. There is no gore. Even the hard puzzles stick to party and costume words.
